Brahms: The Symphonies - Simon Rattle, BPO

The name of Simon Rattle had not been closely associated with the works of Johannes Brahms so it was even more rewarding when his first Brahms recording with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Ein deutsches Requiem, won critical accolades and both Grammy and Classic FM/ Gramophone awards. Now Sir Simon and the Orchestra have committed to disc the complete Brahms symphonies, recorded in concert at Berlins Philharmonie in the autumn of 2008. In the words of Die Zeit, Simon Rattle has finally dared to tackle Brahms with the Berliner Philharmoniker. He combines Furtwänglers monumentality with Karajans beautiful sound. The Brahms symphonies concerts drew praise from the German critics: The fourth symphony was an ecstatic apotheosis of what current orchestral playing, quick reactions and scarcely sketched annotations can get out of this work which has long since become a classic. Especially the Passacaglia finale was a finely-dosed wonder of sound refinement and harmonic finesse. Rattle appears to have finally conquered his difficult Berliners. Symphony No. 94 in G 'Surprise' Hob I/94 - Andante. Joseph Haydn This famous movement by Joseph Haydn is from his 'Surprise' symphony - No. 94 in G, one of the 12 'London' symphonies. These represent the summit of Haydn's symphonic achievement; from the early, Baroque-style days of his early employment to here, the polished yet passionate and serenely lyrical symphonies of the classical era at its height. This movement is famous for the sudden loud chord near the beginning, hence the nickname - the most famous example of Haydn's good-natured humour, a humour which often shows in his delightful music, often very Mozartian (and that is certainly a compliment!) This piece is well-known, although not in the same sense as items such as Beethoven's Fur Elise or Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik - this is well-known amongst throroughly interested fans of classical music, and whether or not you are one of those, I hope you enjoy this witty but beautiful and at times intense and emotional movement, as good an example as any of the classical period within classical music.

Telecast March 22, 1952 from Carnegie Hall, New York City Toscanini's recordings of this symphony from the 20s and 30s show that he used to conduct it with more flexibility and breathing back and forth, but I do prefer these later versions---more direct with stronger flow and propulsive urgent force. The driving clairity and carefully built climaxes still there. He was an early enthusiast of the "original intruments" movement, and would love the clairity and tempi you hear today in the chamber ensemble performances of these symphonies.

Symphony No. 40 in G Minor, K550: 1st movement/Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

This is one of the three great symphonies that Mozart wrote very quickly in the summer of 1788. The very opening of this first movement is strikingly original; just a few notes of accompaniment before the main theme enters. It sets the pattern for the whole movement; a mood of restlessness bordering on grief, with only a few moments of relief. Such an emotional outpouring was something entirely new in symphonic music. At the same time the movement is a perfect model of Classical form.

The music of Mozart

Classical music for your day. Some symphonic music now, we head to the classical era with a symphony by Mozart. From my liner notes, he wrote this when in Rome apparently (it's suggested) when he was only 14 years old. From the booklet, it's labeled as Symphony #10 as well so it's quite an early one of his. You'll notice a 'glitchy' transition from the first movement to the second. There's really not much of a transition because they're both connected so the computer splits it in half. Hope you don't mind! In memory of Vernon Handley 1930 - 2008. The beautiful Romanza from Ralph Vaughan Williams 5th Symphony. RVW conducted the premier in June 1943 at a Royal Albert Hall Prom. One of the greatest symphonies of the 20th century. This recording, performed by Vernon Handley and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in 1986, was awarded BPI best classical recording award in 1988. Beethoven's Symphony Nr. 9 Mvt. 4 transcribed for piano by Franz Liszt. Performer: Cyprien Katsaris History: Franz Liszt the great piano player during the 1800's had transcribed every Beethoven symphony for piano, because he believed that one piano and 10 fingers could produce the same sound that a full orchestra could. He also was in love with Beethoven's works especially his symphonies. When he started transcribing the ninth symphony Liszt ran into a problem in the 4th Movement, he did not know how to implement the choral parts into the music. "After a great deal of experimentation in various directions, I was unable to deny the utter impossibility of even a partially satisfactory and effective arrangement of the 4th movement. I hope you will not take it amiss if i dispense with this and regard my arrangements of the Beethoven symphonies as complete at the end of the 3rd movement of the Ninth." -Franz Liszt But then only a few months later Liszt had figured out a way to implement the choral section, accomplishing what he thought would be impossible. The Symphony transcriptions that Liszt did are so revered that they are considered to be their own works rather than transcriptions; please I hope you enjoy this interpretation of Symphony Nr. 9 Mvt. 4. Akira Ifukube--Master Works: Symphonic Fantasia No. 1 (Part 1)

At long last (for some, anyway) I bring you Akira Ifukube's world famous Symphonic Fantasia, a three part symphony comprised of the composer's most popular film scores of the kaiju eiga ("monster movie") genre. Originally against the idea of turning his movie music into classical pieces because he didn't feel they could be appreciated outside of the films themselves, he eventually gave into popular demand and wrote the following piece, first performed in 1983. The motifs that he uses in this first part is as follows: Godzilla Appears (Mothra vs. Godzilla) Intermezzo (Battle in Outer Space) Godzilla's Theme (Godzilla) Faro Island Chant (King Kong vs. Godzilla) Night Music (Battle in Outer Space) Baragon's Theme (Frankenstein vs. Baragon) Godzilla vs. Rodan (Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster) The final three segments will appear in Part 2 of No. 1. Corky & Siegel-Schwall/Culture Clash/Blues Symphony 1971

It was in 1966 that Seiji Ozawa wanted to bring the blues style of the Siegel-Schwall Band onto the symphonic stage. Corky Siegel has been bringing blues to classical music ever since (see Chamber Blues). This clip is from a 1971 PBS "Great Performances" presentation with Arthur Fiedler, Boston Pops, and Siegel-Schwall performing a clip of William Russo's Three Pieces for Blues Band and Symphony. Siegel-Schwall was formed in 1965 and this is the eairlest known video of the group.

Rene Leibowitz conducts The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (1962) Rene Leibowitz (1913-1972) was born in Warsaw but moved to Paris in his teens and there began a long, illustrious conducting career. Particularly interested in contemporary music, he studied with Webern and Schoenberg and wrote a detailed analysis of twelve-tone music. A keen ear for instrumental coloration (Ravel was his orchestration teacher) was evident in his kaleidoscopic transcriptions of such works as Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C (for double orchestra!). There is no intent to rank them here or among the other classical works. 1) The Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 "Choral" by Beethoven: Completed in 1824, was the first example of a major composer using voices in a symphony. The words were taken from "Ode to Joy", a poem written by Friedrich Schiller in 1785 and revised in 1803, with additions made by the composer. +++ 2) The Symphony No. 9 in E (Op. 95, B. 178) by Antonín Dvořák, popularly known as the New World Symphony, was composed in 1893 during his visit to the United States from 1892 to 1895.
