May 14 - An American composer has sought to capture the psychedelic spirit of the Grateful Dead in a classical symphony. The Grateful Dead, or ''Dead" as they are affectionately known, made their name playing improvisational music born anew with every performance. And the "The Dead Symphony No. 6," by Lee Johnson, encompasses some of the band's most familiar melodies and its most otherworldly jams in a work in 12 movements. The symphony has been years in the making. Atlanta producer Mike Adams, a "Deadhead" fan of the band, got the idea rolling after frontman Jerry Garcia died in 1995. He sought a composer who could cast the Dead's music in a classical form and finally recruited Johnson. You can hear the symphony on XM Radio's Fine Tuning channel on May 27, or buy it at the online store emusic.com. Sep 19, 2008 - Lee Johnson is one of my music professors here at LaGrange College. What an incredibly talented man. I have learned so much from him, even in the year that I've been here. The LaGrange College Chamber Singers are performing his Eighth Symphony this November along with the Columbus State Chamber Singers. Great video! Thanks for posting!
